I
am in love with Beth Gibbons. My wife knows that I am in love with Beth. My
friends know that I am in love with Beth. While I have recently searched the
internet for pictures and come up with a few relatively indistinct photos that
prove Beth to be a reasonably attractive woman, this is not why I love her. It's
her voice. Deep sorrow, joy, love, pain, anguish, and mystery are all expressed
therein, sometimes all at the same time. From the first time I heard Portishead
on a late night public radio program, I have been hooked. This band does Trip
Hop like it should be. No basic drum machine rhythms or over repetitive samples.
Dark, poetic, thought provoking lyrics fuse with exceptional and unique musical
composition. This band is highly original in both style and methods. Geoff is a
master of taking live 'samples' and giving them just the right amount of
roughing up. Adrian Utley and rotating musicians round out the sound. Then
there's Beth.

Dummy
- What a debut. I highly recommend picking up this album immediately and
then finding a premium high fidelity stereo to play it on. Starting out
with Mysterons, a good introduction to the Portishead style with a variety
of odd electronic sounds combined with slightly altered drum lines,
scratching, mixing, samples, a bit of guitar work, and of course Beth.
This is followed up by one of my favorites, Sour Times. The
album then continues on through the heavy,

bass intensive Strangers, a
lovely It Could Be Sweet, the melancholy and thought provoking Wandering
Star and on through a play list that's sure to leave you ready to listen
to it again and again.
