This
British band got their start in Bristol, England during 1991 when remix producer
Geoff Barrow met pub singer Beth Gibbons. Over the next few years they wrote
music together and were often accompanied by jazz guitarist Adrian Utley. By
fall of1994 they were joined by recording engineer and drummer Dave MacDonald
thus completing the four member group. Dummy,
Influenced
by such genres as trip-hop, cool jazz, acid house and soundtrack music, Portishead
developed an atmospheric and alluringly dark sound. Although not as avant-garde
as many of the artists we list here, their unique style tends to appeal to a
more broad audience.
